Social Media Lessons From My Irish Roots

The Irish have a long tradition with words. Writers and poets like Joyce, Wilde & Yeats all come from the Emerald Isle. Long said to hold“The Gift of the Gab” , the people of Ireland are known to have a biting wit and an often satirical nature.  The lyrical language goes back for generations and has sprouted many quotes & sayings still used today. Did you realize how some of those sayings carry over into the modern world in both social media and blogging? Here are 3 quotes and my favorite word in the Gaelic language to explain:

“Everyone is wise until he speaks.” – Irish Drinking Toast

Just about everyone has posted something that they have regretted. It only takes a moment to run spell check or have a second pair of eyes look at your blog before posting. Manage multiple accounts? Double check you are posting in the correct feed before you hit send. You have created a reputation for yourself, maintain it well.

“Every absurdity has a champion to defend it.” – Oliver Goldsmith

The internet is a big place filled with every variety of person and opinion you can imagine. Unfortunately, a part of this mix includes trolls. Some trolls will make it their business to slander and defame a person or business online. Your best defense is to not “feed” them by engaging in a war of words. Just continue to produce the best content you can, most people will be able to tell the difference from the absurd and the true. “The best defense is a good offence”

“Every action of our lives touches on some chord that will vibrate in eternity.” – Sean O’Casey

Social media and the Blogosphere are not like putting pen to paper.  Once something is released to the internet, it is there forever. You can block, mark private, disable right click copy etc. but there are always ways for things to sneak out. You have to remember that the content you produce can leave a permanent mark. When representing yourself as a personal brand, or someone else’s business brand, you have to keep reputation in mind.

Craic – (pronounced: krak) is a term variously meaning news, gossip, fun, entertainment, and enjoyable conversation

Social Media is supposed to be fun. Keep that in mind when using is for business purposes.  No one has fun being barraged with your ads and self promotion. Engage. Be a part of the conversation. Get to know the people of your community and share. Learn about what they are interested in and participate in educating and learning along with them. Never take the fun out of your corporate accounts, let the communities get to know you and show a real personality.

I’ll leave you with an Irish toast:

“Wherever you go and whatever you do,

May the luck of the Irish be there with you”

‘Beannachtam na Feile Padraig!’

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Friday 5… on a time delay

Ok, I am very much aware  that today is Saturday, but yesterday I had a great  idea for the Friday 5, just no time to write.

Yesterday was the birthday of P.G. Wodehouse. Thank you @StephenFry for the announcement yesterday to start this whole idea off. My 5 favorite authors;

1. P.G. Wodehouse – let’s start off with the birthday boy!  He wrote many books  but my favorite series was about two guys called Jeeves & Wooster. This bumbling idiot and his butler kept me laughing thru my messy yucky teen years.

2. Peter Mayle – the author of A Year in Provence, made me fall in love with the south of France

3. J.K. Rowling – I read the 1st Harry Potter because I had to for work – the rest out of love!

4. Jane Austen – takes me to another world

5. My all time favorite author …. Dr Suess!

These books formed me as a human. from my mom reading them to me as a child, to learning how to read with them, listening to Dr Suess’ Sleep Book on tape until it wore out, the Dr. made me passionate for words. His books taught me unlimited creativity, the gift i am most thankful for in my life, he tought me it is ok to be “vocabular”.  The Lorax taught me to care about my world, the Cat taught me to enjoy life and the Sneeches taught me it’s ok if I didn’t have a ‘Star upon Thar’. Ukariah tought me that things sometimes look better without glasses on, and the Grinch showed me people can change. I watch every time a Dr Suess cartoon is on, with the same little kid eyes with love.  I give Dr. Suess books as baby gifts hoping that I can give that same love to someone else.  I would normally put a quote here to finish up, but there are sooo many – here is a link  🙂http://bit.ly/1tCDBN.

Well, now I’m off to start my day in a in a Wacky & Wonderful Woosian Suessian Stumbly Bumbly thinkerific kind of  way! And don’t worry, like the Lorax, I’ll be back… someday.

yawn.

“in the cave with the boys”

After many many long month of un, and under employment, today was my first day at my new job!

When I walked in the door this morning and told the receptionist who I was, I was greeted with “Oh! You’re IT. Your gonna be down in the cave with the boys!” Now, I heard this phrase twice more before I actually walked in.  I felt a wee bit nervous  by hearing this comment.

I was walked thru and introduced to the “upstairs” IT guys, then was walked down to “the cave”.  I got to meet the rest of the web team aka: the boys. I feel very fortunate that, (so far – lol) we are a good mesh of people!  I was able to hit the ground running, but starting to study my first client product,  #Supple Beverages, there will be more on that to come, I am sure…

I am happy to say I will be able to stay in the #BBHILL & #NNSMB (well, except for tomorrow). When I asked about my schedule,  I was told “umm. Well you can get in the door by 6am… but, as long as you get your work done…” so it sounds like I have some fantastical flexibility – woo hoo!

Other random things from today

  • I may need to learn to love potato chips – it appears to be the lunch of choice
  • when they do eat lunch, it’s a China buffet
  • my boss it actually pretty cool and low key
  • we have badge only entrances – lets start a pool for what I’ll have to pay in replacments for forgetting
  • Yes, the company I work for does the ShakeWeight website and fulfillment!!!
  •  I think I need either a phone book or a booster seat for my desk chair
  • i’m planning to ‘girlie up’ my little corner of the bat cave – they’ve been warned
  • there is a great need in this world for a “double bold” button
  • there is also an even bigger need for a “you are stupid” button

I can’t wait to see where this takes me!
