Cool Stuff I Wrote Elsewhere

Just an assembly of things I’ve done on other corners of the interwebz

To Meme or Not to Meme?

At this point we all know the rule of thumb about a business having a presence in social media, A brand needs to show personality.  I absolutely agree with that, but I’ve been thinking: Where do you draw a line between giving a business a personality and just being too silly*?

Are You a Believer?  The beginning of July marks the 65th anniversary of the“incident” at Roswell. To this day, when it comes to the Roswell incident, the world can be divided into ‘believers”, “non believers” and “undecided”. I’d like to say that I’m a believer. Although I watch enough science fiction to qualify as someone who should be a believer, I’m actually more in the “undecided” camp.

People can be place into the same three categories when it comes to using social media for business…

To Stay Productive While Twitter is Down… An attempt at a humor post *fingers crossed*   There have been a few times since I have been working in social media that there has been a major outage in a social site. For me personally, Facebook outages are not a big issue – I carry on with my normal day and I “Keep Calm and Tweet On” if you will. When Twitter goes down on the other hand, things get a bit tougher for me. Here are a few suggestions I’ve found to help those of you, like me that may need some tips to get you through the afternoon…

Lights! Camera! The Pulse Network! Every Tuesday from 1-2 Central time, I put my headphones on and my coworkers know (mostly) not to talk to me. That is when I log into Kitchen Table Talks (#KTCO) presented by Kitchen Table Companies on The Pulse Network for great business talk and conversation in the Twitter chat with the KTCO “family”. The show is emceed by Tyler Puburn and features Chris Brogan & Joe Sorge….

What I learned about Social Media From Star Wars  With the recent celebration of  Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you all) Paul and I decided it was time for another post pairing. (Funny how we choose to do that with the science fiction themes…) While Paul is taking the “Dark Side” on the subject (why wouldn’t he – they have cookies), I am posting from the view of the “rebel scum

Here is what Star Wars has taught me about Social Media….

Baseball, Bobbleheads and Great Customer Service I will always have very high standards when it comes to customer service. Many years of working in various forms of retail & hospitality has most likely put a thin candy coating of cynicism & bitterness on top of my normal rainbows-and-unicorns attitude. So when I come across an experience with great customer service,  I like to shout it from the rooftops…..

Case Study – Kangaroostaurant  When I decided to start doing case studies of local businesses who i feel are doing a great job at social media, the first avatar (yes, I see mental pictures of avatars) was of the bright and colorful one belonging to @kangaroostauran. I sat down with Kelly from Kangaroostaurant,Appleton’s first food truck to talk about how they use social media as an integral part of the business….

Going to a Conference or Trade Show? Start Making Your Connections Now! Picture yourself on day one of an trade show, walking into a cavernous expo center lined with booths and full to capacity with people. You spend the day wandering through the room collecting business cards and trying to remember what booth number that widget you were interested in was located….

Social Media Week Serendipity There is a restaurant in Milwaukee that you may have heard of called  AJ Bombers. Many of us here in the Fox Valley have become good  friends with the “Bomb Squad” via social media and will often visit when we are in town. Our fondness for the place has caused a group of us to begin a campaign to bringAJ Bombers to Appleton, the heart of the Fox Valley…

What I Have Learned About Business (and Life) from Doctor Who (Part 1) irst off, when Paul suggested we co-write a blog based on Doctor Who, I thought, ‘oh dear am I ready to admit this to the world?’  Well here we go. Yes, yes I am ready. I am a fan of Doctor Who. Ahhh, I feel my inner Nerdist is proud and free! I am a recent fan of the series starting with the 10th Doctor, David Tennant. The first episode I saw was ‘Blink’ and, while I may be behind a season or 3,  I have been hooked ever since. There is also an old fashioned phone booth in my back yard that I keep threatening to paint blue & try to fly. Now that you have my (brief) Whovian back story….

12 Most Valuable lessons about Personal Branding That I have learned from Reality TV I have been hearing a lot of talk lately about building a personal brand and have been mulling about how I could best put it into my own perspective. An admitted Reality TV junkie, I thought this format might make for a fun take on the topic. Here are my tips and advice (and a very blatant, shameless attempt to get noticed by the people over at….
